Larval salamanders present in shallow farm pond in the middle of a hayfield. Total length = 3 to 3.5 inches, color pale greenish/yellow-gray with minute dark flecks. Largest of them had 3 longitudinal reddish brown stripes (one dorsal the other 2 lateral). Kept 2 larvae until they metamorphed. Metamorphs had slate gray color, short stocky body, and enlarged head typical of talpoideum. Original photo was on 35mm slide film. They did not transfer well to my smartphone! I'm told the landowner removed the earthen dam to drain this pond, though it may still be holding a little water. There are other ponds quite close to it though, which would be worth checking. Description

Nice story behind this one. Coming back into the car from a previous spot, someone else asked me if I had seen snakes, to which I responded that I had found a single gopher snake. He was a little worried but I assured him I only found it because I was looking. He responded telling me that I must really like snakes, but he doesn't and usually shoots them. Disappointing to hear, but really, there's nothing I can say in 10 seconds that can change someone's mind. An hour or so later, I see a car stopped ahead of me. The same person is outside and pointing at something on the road. As I get closer I realize it's a sizeable crote, this specimen. I move him a little to get him coiled up for hooking, while he asks me several questions about defensiveness, populations, babies, etc. Overall, it was a great experience for him to witness a rattlesnake without any fear. After a while, as they leave, I hear his wife telling him that they shouldn't shoot the next rattler they see on their property. Nice words to hear :)

what works best to help people get over their dislike for snakes in my experience is 3 things:

  • casual handling - when they see you handling a rattlesnake calmly as if it isn't a dangerous activity (because it honestly isn't if you know what you are doing) then they soon realize the danger is far overblown. You really can't blame them for having the wrong idea after watching sensationalist videos that sell the aggressive snake narrative their whole life
  • talk about baby rattlesnakes - expecially if you talk about them as someone would talk about a puppy or something, people empathize with them a little and they don't want to come across as evil
  • show your interest - as humans are social we like to conform with what those around us think, and when you show an interest in snakes people automatically will want to fit in. Which can lead to them having some grown appreciation for these guys.

It's always a nice moment when an encounter with those less fond of snakes goes this well.
