Austria - iNaturalist World Tour
Austria is the 39th stop on the iNaturalist World Tour. The top observer is @carnifex who is based around the capital of Vienna
along with @t0ntie, @lrasran, @kumpelblase, @pearmonger and others. Top observer @gernotkunz is at the Karl Franzens University of Graz where he has been contributing a lot of observations of the generally neglected leaf and planthoppers. @carnifex tells us he also continues to introduce iNat to his students and already recruited several users from the region. The area around Graz in Styria is now well covered with observers and observations, mainly due to his efforts. We already mentioned @gernotkunz's research in the Costa Rica post and you can check out his "Animals of Costa Rica" app here. Other top observers around Sytria include @botanico and @leolorber. @bryoniad12's observations are clustered in Carinthia and @mondseeirrsee's along the boundary between Salzburg and Upper Austria. @jeremybarker's observations are centered near Lake Constanz along the Swiss border.
iNaturalist has been growing rapidly in Austria. The peak in August 2017 is when we helped @carnifex migrate over some of his observations from the Observado platform. In June 2018, @gernotkunz started to use the site extensively, which probably contributed to the uptick there.
@carnifex is another example of single person holding top observer and top identifier positions in a country. @borisb, @epsilon, and @ldacosta lead in insect, plant and bird identifications respectively. Thanks to other top identifiers such as @amzamz, @horticultix, and @honspera

Thanks @loarie! There is a bunch of other local (mostly Austrian or German) platforms where observations can be uploaded, and I think a certain amount of people would rather remain there than switching to an international platform. However, these platforms often cover only a subset of taxa, so not suited for universal use.
Looking at current species numbers, I find it interesting that although e.g our neighbour Switzerland has 20,000 obs more (63k vs 43k), Austria has 600 more taxa observed (about 5700) and with only half the obs number compared to South Korea only 300 taxa less. I am not sure if this is more an indicator of a high diversity of habitats in a small area or of a diversity of observers :)

Thanks for the positive feedback @loarie and @jakob , that really means a lot to us (me and @carnifex ). I want to use this occasion to specially thank all identifiers (at least of my uploads). Some, like @claudioflamigni @borisb @amzamz @carnifex @gianfrancodramis @dkavanaugh @richardjaybee @wongun @lbous have identified over 100 uploaded pics. SO THANKS A LOT!!! Without you, iNaturalist wouldn´t work as well as it does! Also thanks to all the programmers like @kueda who have been doing an amazing job to create iNaturalist as it is.
I see iNaturalist as an amazing project bringing together 1000snds of people that all benefit from the project in a certain way. At the same time, incredibly important data is gathered for future nature conservation issues and maybe even most important, with iNaturalist, more and more young people find their way back to nature and environmental consciousness. @carnifex yes, I too tried a few "local" alternatives before coming to iNat. Would love to see inaturalist.eu or austria.inaturalist.org in the future and not each year a new platforms which gets funded. Expect projects which don't need all the functions from iNat or are specialized like the butterfly citizen science project, this was great with good results.
Thanks @loarie for the mentioning. I can say that I just started with INat in early spring this year and find it a great opportunity to share and after all identify all kinds of obs.
To help INat grow - my more than 900 observations and still growing follow kind of a plan. The region #Mondsee and #Irrsee is about to become a special conservation area by the state of Upper Austria. By the end of this year all landowners (mainly farmes and forest owners) are asked to bring in their land in this special kind of natural protection. The first projects will be to get the local inhabitants interested in the broad biodiversity we have. That's where we thought of using INat by showing the collected and ided obs so far. Second step will be to animate the locals to use INat (or Seek) to identify themselves what's living around them. In the future the whole region should be proud of their natural and cultural heritage. Let's see if INat helps to visualize, identify and conservate our nature. greets thomas (#Mondsee #Irrsee)
