Year In Review 2017
We like stats, and we like you, so we made this year-in-review page for you to consider (and share!):

Most of it is self-explanatory, but there are some tricky bits:

We're mostly just showing counts of verifiable observations. That means even though we're showing some "casual" observations in the pie chart at the top, the number in the middle is for your verifiable observations.

"Species" means "leaf taxa." If you have one observation of Genus Hyla and another of the species Vulpes vulpes we count that as two "species." If you have one of Genus Vulpes and another of the species Vulpes vulpes, we count that as one "species."

"Most Comments and Faves" are sorted by faves, then comments. Observations with lots of comments tend to be interesting, but observations with lots of faves tend to be pretty. We're suckers for pretty.

The map is interactive! Zoom around and you can watch the animation on a local scale. You can also click the date to pause and use the arrow keys to move forward and backward in time.

The "sunburst" is also interactive! This diagram will probably be a bit mystifying for some folks, but mousing over things will explain what the arcs represent, and you can click on them to view just that taxon. For touch users, tapping will have to suffice.

Ken-ichi, thank you for the vivid graphic portrayal of annual stats! I had a sneak preview of this (thanks Cassi) and I think it's quite an achievement, blending attractive design with all of those statistics that the nerdiest naturalists revel in. Very cool! A lot of fun to review. What surprised me is how similar my proportions of taxa observed parallel the overall iNat stats. I am mostly a bird and plant person, but as I seek out birds and plants, I stumble across all sorts of things and the end result is pretty amazing. Thanks!

Neat stuff - I can only echo the comments made above! Any idea why there was a spike in observations etc. in mid April?
The spike was from City Nature Challenge!

It is really cool to get the stats for oneself (or any other user).
Any chance that a similar concept could be done for a Place or Location or Network? - say by country or city?
or for Projects.?

@tonyrebelo, you can go to https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/2017/you for your stats. Replacing the "you" part of the URL with another username will take you to that person's stats, but only if that user has generated them. No stats page for projects or anything else this year.
You can get site stats from the iNat network as follows:

(keep in mind these are counting stats based on the network affiliation of users associated with observations which is different from observations made in Mexico etc.)
Thanks tiwane and loarie. Yes: I looked at the pages for several other southern African users, the moment I had looked at my own. However, I tried the NZ site using that url and I could not get it to work - Oh - I see I tried the secure site https://inaturalist.nz/stats/2017 - that still does not work.
Oh, dear, I will just have to accept that I cannot automatically generate any statistics for southern Africa this year (either by affiliation or by region).
But thanks: this is a fun tool. And I still have two days to play around and change things for 2017!

Figured out how to look at my previous years too! - and I was able to pick up a date posting error in 2015 looking at the map animation. Love it! Love looking at how iNat is doing too!

I just started using the site this year but it has been a game changer for me in exploring nature. It made me curious to identify everything I saw not just birds and mammals but the smaller things like plants and bugs. It has opened a whole new world to me. I especially love being able to help others identify things and them helping me identify things. I can't wait for a 2018 and the new adventures. Happy New Year!
I started using I Nat about 14 months or so ago
It awesome and has help me to re focus my energy on something positive
My background is civil engineering and overseas work
I’ve have a blast with this. Also hopefully I’ll be able to add 2000 new species
To my count this coming year. Also after years of not being able to get a good idea about certain flora and fun a distributions I’m hoping I’ve made a Little bit of a diffence this past year and more next year

just found all these comments and had to agree, i love these stats and any more you all have time to generate pages for would be great. Like first observations on iNat, life list firsts (I think @bouteloua mentioned that? or someone)... stats by place as many had mentioned, etc etc. Maybe a page to track year life list with firsts (there would be a lot but would be fun). Love it! It was -27 this morning so i am feeling cooped up, but once it thaws a little time to start adding to the 2018 life list
@charlie If you go to your calendar it tells you how many and what life list firsts you had that day. I don't know if it's new but I just found it last night.
Oh, yeah that has been there a while and i look at it a lot. I was thinking year list species, but my post was poorly worded :) I love the life list feature.
I am curious how many user contributed to iNaturalist total in 2017; how many individual accounts submitted at least one observation? How many accounts had any activity at all (comments, ID, observation, or anything)? Is there any way to find either of these stats on the iNatu website currently?

@upupa_epops : you can easily find the first: go to the observations on the top menu (click) and using the filters select the more filters and give the start and end date of any period Added and Update search. That will show you the number of observations, species, identifications and users for that period (beware that you may have a place filter - you may want to click it off to see the world view, or you may want the Ontario totals). Click on any of these headings to see the latest and leaders.
If the area or time period is small enough and not too active (less than 500 users), you can get the rest of your stats under the observers tab as well. But not for the entire site easily.
